Iron Uptake Systems in Fungi,f fungi synthesize and excrete iron chelating agents to facilitate the permeation of ferric ions across the cytoplasmic membrane. The ferric specific chelating agents of microbial origin are now collectively called siderophores, although there is only limited analogy to the classical ionophores, such as valinomycin, enniatins, nigericins etc.

Iron nutrition is suspected to play an important role in both phenomena, and indeed, the knowledge of the iron uptake mechanisms occurring in the fluorescent pseudomonads is an important step in the understanding of the relationships existing between plants and their microflora.

Absorption, Transport and Metabolic Significance of Iron in Plants, pH which allows any ferrous iron to be oxidised very readily. Hence in such soils practices are followed which increase the solubility of iron such as mulching with organic matter or peat or spraying crops with ferrous sulphate or iron chelates, or even adding native sulphur to the soil (Wallace et al., 1982).
