‘Policemen in a Search Team’: Iris Murdoch’s , and Ian McEwan’s similar paradoxes as they apparently subscribe to positions that undermine the stability of the literary text, while simultaneously subscribing to the moral tradition of the novel. Indeed, these novels could be said to perform a literary ‘duet’.
