Orographically Forced Variability in the Coastal Marine Atmospheric Boundary Layeropographic points and capes. Regions of large stress, and curl of stress, frequently appear in the lee of such coastal protrusions. Mesoscale mountain gravity waves, diurnally varying cross-coast baroclinity and supercritical flow effects can all contribute to these pronounced, localized gradients.
