Heterojunctions,ay occur within a few (2 or 3) atomic layers. With lattice mismatching (> 0.1%) of the two semiconductors defects are formed at the interface, which lead to considerable deviations from the ideal behavior of a heterojunction.

Strip Waveguides,ytical calculation of the mode fields and the propagation constants is not possible, apart from a few exceptions (e.g. waveguides of circular cross-section in a homogeneous outer layer). One therefore has to rely on approximate solutions.
