EinführungDie Informationstheorie beschreibt mit den Mitteln der Wahrscheinlichkeitsrechnung die Darstellung, Codierung und Übertragung von Information, um ihren Fluss in technischen Systemen zu analysieren und zu optimieren. Wichtig dabei ist die Abgrenzung des naturwissenschaftlich-technischen Begriffs der Information vom alltäglichen Sprachgebrauch.

Der wechselseitige Informationsgehalt spiegelt die aufgelöste Ungewissheit über das Zeichen . wieder, wenn . bekannt ist - oder umgekehrt, siehe auch Tabelle 4-3.
