The use of sparse matrix techniques for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, the special geometry of this problem and no restrictions are made with respect to the sparsity pattern of the coefficient matrices. The methods are tested for two different discretizations of the convective terms (upwind discretization and central differences) and for Reynoldsnumbers equal to 150 and 500.

The effect of incomplete decomposition preconditioning on the convergence of Conjugate Gradients, of the system, using an incomplete Choleski decomposition . of the matrix ., and the subsequent iterative solution of this system by the conjugate gradients method. For the construction of an incomplete Choleski decomposition it is, in addition, desirable that . be an .-matrix (see, e.g., ).
