Contribution of the Bursa of Fabricius to the Maturation of the B Cell System in Chickens that beyond a certain age the B cell system in chickens had matured to a stage where bursal influence (humoral?, cellular?) is less essential and the system had become self-perpetuating, suggesting a non-bursal site taking over (see also: 2, 3).

Hence, it seems that antigen is necessary for maintaining clonal proliferation. The specific B cell involved in giving rise to large clones clearly reacted to an antigen-mediated signal in addition to that provided by LPS.
