Excavation and preliminary studies of the ancient mummies of Xinjiang in Chinaecaying for a long period. The upper class favoured different kinds of chemical treatment, for instance involving mercury as a preserving agent. Even the graves were at some occasions dug very deep and were densely sealed. This has contributed to the conservation of some of the bodies during several thousand years.

The mummy find from Qilakitsoq in northwest Greenlandm. Neither the extent of the find was known, nor the number of buried persons. In early 1978, however, the graves were opened and samples were taken for radio carbon dating. The mummified bodies of two children, who were encountered just below the cap stones, were sent to Copenhagen with the samples.

Mummies and ethics in the museummily was stored. The artillery bombardment and the resulting fire destroyed many crates and boxes filled with ethnological exhibits. They also destroyed — and this is of particular interest in our context — the “Four representatives of humanity down to the last speck of dust” as a contemporary description put it.
