Reading , is not an easy novel to understand unless the reader begins to notice the trail of clues Forster has laid to guide him. In his book, ., (1927) Forster distinguished ‘the story ’from ‘the novel’, explaining that these two elements of a work of fiction correspond to two components of everyday life. In the second chapter of his book he says:
