Book 1991he seminar led us to conclude that similar goals were to be found in studies of the topic that spanned the breadth of ecological research. Yet, the exact meaning of ‘habitat structure‘, and the way in which it was measured, seemed to differ widely among subdisciplines. Our own research, which involv

Histogenesis and Organogenesis,d ., 1979; Lawton, 1983). Together, these components of vegetation structure define to a large extent the habitats of herbivorous insects. Variation in these components and interactions among them result in an array of habitat possibilities, each with different consequences for herbivorous insects.

The influence of habitat structure on the transmission of parasitestion and abundance of susceptible hosts, often enhancing the heterogeneity of host spatial distributions. The great diversity of host-finding mechanisms exhibited by parasites is quite likely the product of strong selection for the ability to locate patchily distributed hosts.
