Eclipsing Hierarchy,tic crisis, particularly for leaders that rely heavily on hierarchical coercion to stay in power. Through a cross-sectional statistical analysis, I demonstrate that the end of hierarchy accompanies civil conflict throughout the globe. This mechanism explains the waves of civil conflict in the 1940s, 1960s, and 1990s.
