Physical Models of Perfect Quasicrystal Growthtiling, according to “physical” rules, i.e., ones involving one-by-one addition of tiles to a growing cluster. I will then show some of our new work on the properties of defects in these growth algorithms.

Generation and Dynamics of Defects in Two-Dimensional Quasicrystalsre. In a first simulation, based on a Eden-type growth algorithm of a Penrose Tiling, we observe defects similar to vacancies which do not destroy quasi-long-range order. In a second simulation, a molecular dynamics based on an atomistic model, we find that phason relaxation occurs only in presence of vacancies.

Structure and Growth of Two- and Three-Dimensional Hexatic Liquid Crystalserfectly periodic array that extends to infinity in all three directions. The other extreme is a fluid, in which the atoms or molecules are completely disordered and the material is both orientationally and positionally isotropic that is, it looks the same when viewed from any direction.

Intrinsic Frustration and Space Curvature in Smectic a Liquid Crystalslk and layer orientation perpendicular to the Smectic A-Isotropic interface. In a 2D model, this frustration is released in the S. curved space. Uncurving S. to R., one finds back the bâtonnets and “zig-zag” shapes observed in thin samples.

Hans-Dieter Huber,Martin Kranerteen possible to describe its structure as a decoration of a three-dimensional (3D) Penrose tiling.. Attempts to determine such a model for Al73Mn21Si6 have not been succesful.. Instead, a sixdimensional model for its structure was proposed, which did give a good fit to the diffraction data..
