The Domestication of Colonial Life: after 1940ise fixing up sirens as air raid warnings’ (10 November 1938, Ms., p. 150). A few years later, she tells of their house being designated as an air-raid warden’s post and its roof being reinforced to allow a gun emplacement; men were on duty all night with the Defence Force and then at their job during the day (7 September 1942; Ms., p. 160).

Yet the question has not been fully answered: why should these European women in the colonies remain all but invisible or else be represented in pejorative stereotypes?
