IntroductionMore than 30 years ago an endemic mouse virus was discovered that induced tumors in newborn animals. Tumors developed in many different organs of the infected mouse, hence the name Polyomavirus. The virus also transforms cultured rodent embryo cells, which give rise to tumors when injected into susceptible animals (Tooze 1981).
