Ulrich Ratsch,Ion-Olimpiu Stamatescuye movement, where a subject orients to a well-defined target that appears suddenly in the visual periphery. This is a piece of behavior that has been extensively studied and is reasonably well understood. It is argued that it can provide a good point of departure for examining cognitive influences.

Morton P. Friedman,J. P. Das,Neil O’Connorntial treatment. Overt orienting can be directly observed in the form of eye movements; convert orienting involves an internal adjustment and must be inferred from performance patterns. James (1890) probably had a distinction of this sort in mind when he contrasted adjustment of the sensory organs with an internal “anticipatory preparation.”
