Management Techniques for Multispecies Fisheries,a full suite of information required for management is likely to be beyond the scope of the organizations with responsibility for the fisheries concerned. Selection of key information is therefore critical, and a format which could aid managers achieve this selection is discussed.

Kinds of Variability and Uncertainty Affecting Fisheries, nse to external variations. Both aspects have one feature in common. The external variability and the internal interactions occur across a very wide range of space and time scales — from questions of initiation of larval feeding (hours/meters) to the appearance and disappearance of regional breeding stocks (10. years/10. kms).

single populations and the dynamics of systems with many species. The later two themes take up questions of management under uncertainty and multispecies management. In all this, the word "fish" is interpreted broadly to include such taxonomically varied beasts as whales, shrimp, crabs, shellfish, and squid, 978-3-642-70159-7978-3-642-70157-3

Three examples illustrating that small-scale or model relationships can be recognized in open, large natural communities are given. How, but

Managing Fisheries under Biological Uncertainty, ral be sorted out through statistical procedures for adaptively reestimating parameters, since various effects are generally confounded with one another. Detailed process research and understanding may be of some help, but ultimately we may be forced to use the old scientific idea of replicated expe
