International Conference on Environmental Bioassay Techniques and their ApplicationA short overview is given of the primary objectives of environmental research and management and of the importance of bioassay to these objectives. Current deficiencies in the availability of quantifiable bioassays and in the formulation of research needs and priorities are highlighted.

The use of environmental assays for impact assessmentanalyses for toxic chemicals and the relevance of bioassays for predicting risk to ecosystems. Research is urgently needed to find better ways to solve these problems, particularly with respect to chronic exposures.

The possibility of developing a general theoretical infrastructure for bioassays that addresses this problem is considered.
