Neuronal Mechanisms of the First, Second, and Third Order Contrast in the Visual Systemy MACH’s bands and his explanation of this phenomenon by a negative lateral retinal interaction. They are useful also in neurophysiology and many can be correlated with the activities of single neurons at different levels of processing (BAUM-GARTNER /I/; v.d.HEYDT et al./2/; PETERHANS et al./3/).
