General Section,: A record taken with surface electrodes gives only a general impression of the electrical activity of whole muscle groups or, less often, individual muscles. It may, however, be useful in the investigation of central distrubances of innervation and in mechanomyography.

EMG of the Extraocular Muscles,It is often of great importance to decide whether an impairment of eye movement is the result of a myopathy, a neurogenic lesion, myasthenia, or a central disturbance. Sampling with a concentric needle electrode may provide the answer, and EMG of these muscles has the following characteristics:

Centrally-Determined Disturbances of Movement,Qualitative changes are here absent from the EMG. Paradoxical innervation such as in Duane’s syndrome may be found, but simultaneous recordings are advisable as proof. EMG help is especially valuable before surgery.

Short Introduction to an EMG Examination,Preparation. The object and form of the investigation is explained to the patient, and he is instructed as to how he may best co-operate. Weak and full effort with those muscles which will be examined are rehearsed without needles. The patient is then brought to a relaxed state in a comfortable position.
