Ivan: Character Structure and BeliefsThere Have Been Many Brilliant Discussions of Ivan Karamazov’s thematic significance, but little attention has been paid to the richness of Dostoevsky’s mimetic portrait of this character. There is a great deal of psychological detail that looms very large when we approach Ivan as an imagined human being and try to understand his motivations.

Ivan: After the Murderns and dreams, he begins to have encounters with a devil who embodies the skeptical ideas that he now feels to be the worst part of himself. He oscillates between denial and self-knowledge, unbelief and stirrings of faith.
