On July 1, 1935, Martha Wollstein retired as Pathologist of Babies Hospital after almost 45 years of service. Her replacement was Beryl Paige, and Andersen then took Paige’s position as Assistant Pathologist. Andersen was 34 years old, and she was first identified as the responsible pathologist for a pediatric autopsy at Babies Hospital in August.

It cannot have escaped Dorothy Andersen’s notice that Martha Wollstein, now recognized as one of the founders of pediatric pathology , faded quickly from view after retiring. Andersen‘s landmark 1938 CF study seemed to ensure her a more permanent legacy.
