By far the most striking parts are those nearest the church, although the pavement extends over an area of 2.5 square kilometres, and there are other pavements nearby at Newbiggin Crags (SD 545795).

However, to appreciate this countryside fully you need to take to the footpaths and tracks, and none is better than that along the beautiful Alport valley. The main footpath begins beside the A57 just west of the Alport River, near Hayridge Farm (SK 141896).

One of the most beautiful parts of this unspoiled area is Dovedale, notable for its rock spires and natural arches and for the excellence of its trout.
