Phenylalanine Transport at the Human Blood-Brain Barriern. The results show that the .. values for phenylalanine transport are virtually identical at either the rat or human BBB. Therefore, the marked derangements in brain amino acid metabolism caused by hyperphenylalaninemia in rats may also occur in humans at comparable increases in blood phenylalanine.

Regional Transport of Phenylalanine and Other Neutral Amino Acids Across the Blood-Brain Barrier. There was no effect on the activity of the neutral amino acid transport system in any structure. In hepatic encephalopathy, influx was markedly increased by both changes in plasma amino acids and increases in the transport activity. These changes may be of etiologic significance to cerebral dysfunction.

Adrenergic Influence on Plasma and Brain Concentrations of Phenylalanine and Other Large Neutral Amincentrations of the same amino acids. The increase in brain concentrations of LNAA could obviously not be explained by the competition among the LNAA in plasma for the carrier-mediated transport into the brain. These findings indicate that the transport of LNAA from plasma into the brain is regulated by a β-adrenergic mechanism.
