Endosperm Development and Embryogenesiseries of structural transformations, give rise to the prototype of the adult plant known as the embryo, consisting of the root apical meristem at one end and the shoot apical meristem at the other. As the ovule is transformed into the seed, the developing embryo obtains its nurture and nourishment from the surrounding cells of the endosperm.

Dormancy of Seeds and Buds evolved in other plant organs such as buds of woody and herbaceous plants and shrubs as well as in tubers, bulbs, and rhizomes. A common feature displayed by these organs is reduced growth; in seeds, growth of the embryo is blocked, whereas in buds and other organs, growth of the shoot apical meristem is inhibited.
