The Star Observation Strategy for Hipparcos description of the main mission concept, the requirements and constraints which have been considered in the selection of the SOS are discussed. The SOS algorithm is then introduced and the general conclusions which can be drawn from the results of extensive simulations performed with realistic data are finally indicated.
