Lithium treatment of mania and depression over one hundred yearsomprised a limited number of severely ill, hospitalized, psychiatric patients. His results proved lithium to be thera-peutically effective in all ten manic patients, while in six patients with dementia praecox there was a recordable but unsatisfactory effect, and in three chronically depressed, psychotic patients there was no effect at all.
