Persons with Down Syndrome: Facial Characteristics, Self- and Other-Perception, and Social Acceptancal appearance mediates others’ perceptions of an individual and that these, in turn, influence others’ acceptance of and consequent behavior toward the individual. Proponents of this view also assume that physical appearance mediates the individual’s self-perception, which, in turn, influences self-acceptance and consequent behavior toward others.
