Halophytes and human welfaree countries. According to Massoud (1977) about 7% of the total surface area of the world is covered by salt affected land. Although the arable portion of this sizeable area is not exactly known, it is estimated that more than 50% of all irrigated land of the world has been damaged by secondary salini zation and/or sodification and water logging.
