The US and Italy’s Relations with the Soviet Union, 1958–19s challenged Cold War oil policies, they also strengthened Italy’s position and membership inside NATO. At the same time, once the process of détente made relations between the blocs easier, ENI and Italy claimed the role of pioneers who had anticipated certain forms of cooperation between Western Europe and the USSR.

Stalin’s Oil Policy and the Iranian Crisis of 1945–1946s crisis be considered the beginning of the Cold War. Moscow was not interested in a confrontation with its former Western Allies and ultimately pulled its troops back from Iran in 1946, just after an agreement had been reached with the Iranian government on the question of oil.
