Second-Order Semilinear Evolution Equations,Time-dependent perturbation theory is used to study the generalized cross sections for the two-photon ionization of a metastable helium atom. Multipole interference effects are considered. It is shown that for certain photon frequencies, significant enhancement of cross section occurs due to the quadrupole effects.

In particular it is shown that certain geometrical factors, which suggest a preferential population of particular magnetic substates, can be separated from the excitation amplitudes. The case of excitation is discussed in detail.

Correlation in Electron-Atom Excitation,ources of systematic error in experimental results with respect to determination of the correlation parameters λ and χ for helium are discussed. The results of several calculations are compared to the experimental data for the 2.P. state of helium.
