https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-94087-8Having resisted successful parallelization so far, this paper shows how the sandpile cellular automaton can be efficiently parallelized on multicore computers with shared memory. New algorithms for both the sequential and parallel case are being introduced. Implementations in Java show a good speed-up which increases with the grid size.
