The Fluctuating Shelf-seas of the Jurassic,rranean and the Alps, a sea to which geologists have given the name .. This was bordered, in the usual way, by shelf-seas whose constantly-changing shapes occupied central and northern Europe during the Mesozoic.

The Alpine Mountain-building and the Later Tertiary, along the line of the Mediterranean and the Alps, occupied by the geosynclinal sea known to geologists as Tethys. This geosyncline underwent several preliminary folding movements, culminating in a main phase in the mid- or late Oligocene when the Alpine fold mountains were formed.
