Ulf Brefeld,Elisa Fromont,Céline Robardetan brain slices or in the intact brain. Employing optical recordings and a display processor, the images of nerve cells light up on a TV monitor when they are electrically active. Thus, the spread of electrical activity can literally be visualized in slow motion. This chapter describes recent progress in the implementation of this new technique.

Correlated Electrophysiological and Biochemical Studies of Hippocampal Slices, rates by Kandel and others have located synapses that are modified by experience (see Kandel, 1981, for a review). Comparable efforts on mammalian central nervous system (CNS), hampered as they are by the extraordinary complexity of the brain, are still at the stage of conclusively pinning down sites that show lasting traces of experience.

Neocortex, ocortical neurons and their physiological properties. The correlative knowledge to be gained from such an approach will be invaluable to future models of cortical integration (Gilbert and Wiesel, 1981).

Hypothalamic Neurobiology, alamus, viewed as it were, through the slice, is somewhat clearer than it was heretofore. Some of our prior notions, gleaned from . studies, have been confirmed; others have been modified beyond recognition. A few extremely well-kept hypothalamic secrets have been revealed, though many await our further arduous sleuthing activities.

Lecture Notes in Computer Science, the neuronal network. However, it is evident, following the development of the . preparations, that much of the electrophysiology encountered in mammalian neurons does not derive necessarily from the attributes of networks but, rather, from the intrinsic electrical properties of the cells themselves.
