The loss of carbon shifts marshes from net sinks to net sources of carbon for the atmosphere. Losses of salt marsh equate to 1.1 Pg CO. equivalents returned to the atmosphere or coastal ocean since the 1800s.

Summary and Conclusions,.52–$1.04 for salt marshes, $3.51–$7.67 for mangroves and $7.02–$14.04 for seagrasses. Salt marshes, mangrove forests and seagrass meadows sequester and store more carbon than all other marine ecosystems and clearly are prime sites to retain carbon as any losses back to the atmosphere or coastal ocean are disproportionate to their small area.
