Kirk and Fenn (1982) have calculated the annual production rate of lignocellulose at 20–50 × 10. tonnes, of which 4 × 10. tonnes could be made available on an annual basis. Glasser and Kelly (1987) suggested that the waste lignin derived from the pulp and paper industry is of the order of 30 – 50 × 10. tonnes per year.
