Different Kinds of Nothing, involves a central appeal to intuition. As Stebbing had foreseen, rival appeals to intuition are counterpoised against Bergson’s view by Heidegger and Sartre. To complicate matters further, Ayer employs a version of Carnap’s argument against Sartre, whose views on nothingness had resulted from his engagement with Bergson.
