Clinical Assessment,ield has its own methods. As a consequence, results from different centres are not always easily compared, so that the relative merits of the different surgical procedures used in the treatment of the arthritic knee are almost impossible to assess.

Arthrodesis,ompression technique was the quickest of all the major orthopaedic operations to achieve its result. Bony fusion strong enough to permit unsupported weight-bearing could be achieved in a total period of 8 weeks and with a remarkably small failure rate.

In proposing arthroplasty one must be confident that the advantages of arthrodesis will be retained, with the added bonus of a functional arc of movement.
