Book 2005s the encoding of subject and direct object in conversational Japanese and attempts to explain Japanese argument encoding as a unified system. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of a bank of conversation are provided, with the emphasis on speakers‘ use of the encoding types rather than their acceptability for given arguments.

Reproduction and Development in CtenophoresThis chapter summarizes previous observations and claims relevant to the scope of the present study. The six argument encoding types have mostly been studied disjointly; thus, the summary is presented accordingly for each individual encoding type, except for those discussed together in the literature.

This chapter describes the six encoding types in light of anaphoric saliency.

Xiangzhou Xu,Tongxin Zhu,Hongwu Zhang,Lu GaoAs discussed in Chapter 2, there has been a consideration that postpredicative encoding reflects speakers’ production-based motivations. An explicit claim of this type is found in .proposed by Simon (1989: 189), who states postposings

Cataphoric Saliency,The preceding chapter has shown that the index of anaphoric saliency points to the properties of only a subset of the six encoding types. This chapter uses the other saliency index — cataphoric saliency — to examine each encoding type further.
