Novels of the 1930s,tically than the next four novels, proclaims itself avant-garde. More than half the text is dialogue, much of it curt and informal in the manner made fashionable by Hemingway. There is relatively little guidance in the delineation of characters, discussion of themes, or telling of the tale.
