The National Air and Space Museum,Hap Arnold’s charisma had persuaded Congress to authorize a National Air Museum. His dowry of aircraft provided by the United States Air Force had also made this the best-endowed museum of aviation in the world. For the Smithsonian he had created a quagmire of problems.

Searching for a Home to Display the ,,While we at the museum were searching for a site best suited to displaying the ., there were plenty of others who were willing to find such a site for us—usually with the aim of wresting ownership of the aircraft from the Smithsonian. Most of the veterans who were so inclined favored Offutt Air Force Base, at Omaha, Nebraska.
