White light emitting diodes,the phosphor Y.Al.O.:Ce.(4f.) is ideally suited. The optical characteristics of Ce.(4f.) in Y.Al.O.(YAG) are discussed in detail. Possibilities to “tune” the white color by various substitutions in the garnet lattice are shortly outlined.
