On the Ban on Postverbal , Phrases in Turkish: A Syntactic Accountrived from overt syntax. Building on empirical facts revealing the scope of focus is read directly from overt syntax, it is proposed that a postverbal . phrase, being a variable, stays in a position where it cannot be bound by its operator, hence the ungrammaticality.
