The Observing Astronomical Society,ional projects. In concept it was to be a society of practical observers, equipped with good astronomical instruments, intent upon performing formalized, diligent research work. This was not, as such, to be a club for the casual observer, but rather a movement of observers who would dedicate time to specific observational projects.

The Amateur Astronomer,An important factor in distinguishing the amateur astronomer from the mere dilettante is that the amateur sets out to follow some form of research program. This was certainly Denning’s viewpoint. For all this, however, Denning stressed the importance of setting time aside for teaching, and the bringing of new observers into astronomy.
