Mainland Escapes,e short period of two weeks between the end of the fighting on the Peninsula and the fall of Singapore, the island still offered some hope for those left behind who were bold and resourceful enough to make an escape bid. After 15 February 1942, Singapore, too, was Japanese-occupied territory and no longer part of any obvious escape-route.
