Introduction,iscipline. In the 1980s these negative sentiments have proved all too easily translatable into disproportionately severe cutbacks for sociology (and other social sciences) in those societies whose governments have made a shibboleth out of reducing public expenditure.

As for the National Centre for Scientific Research, the CNRS, created by statute in 1948, though it was to be a driving force in the development of research, this did not become perceptible until about fifteen years after the end of the war.
