Molecular Basis for Accumulation of Compatible Osmolytes in Mammalian Cellsance (NMR) spectrometry identified four predominant compatible organic osmolytes in the renal medullas of rabbits and rats, namely sorbitol, glycerophosphorylcholine (GPC), betaine, and myo-inositol (inositol) (Bagnasco et al. 1986). The same solutes are present in the renal medullas of other mammals.
